About Me
Hi! I would like to go ahead and tell you a little bit about myself…
My name is Mindie, and for the majority of my life I was able to maintain a nice balance between working hard and playing hard. I have had a number of different jobs, including various service industry positions (bartending, serving, etc.), travel nannying, an overseas personal assistant, a Bridal Alterations Specialist, and a number of property management roles. I have spent some time traveling the world a bit and, up until my car accident a little over five years ago, I spent most of my summers enjoying the great outdoors, traveling to visit friends and family, and going to concerts and festivals. This was my life before the car accident that resulted in a number of physical injuries, a mTBI, and post-concussion syndrome.
After my accident - I found that I was unable to do any of the things I loved to do but I couldn’t figure out why. I could barely function physically, mentally, emotionally, or behaviorally. I was fighting with my friends and family because I couldn’t keep it together and I would have meltdowns like a toddler because I just couldn’t control myself.
Unfortunately, this is a reality that many mTBI survivors face daily.
I could no longer work or hold a conversation without getting confused and frustrated. I had difficulty understanding what people were talking about - especially if there were other conversations going on in the same room - and couldn’t stand being around noise or bright light. I would get lost driving to places I had been to hundreds of times (like the house I grew up in) and was confused all of the time. I had seemingly endless neck pain and migraines. I would forget I was cooking and wander off, and was often too exhausted to grocery shop - but didn’t have the cognitive function at the time to figure out how to fix it. My friends and family still wanted to go on like nothing had changed - stating that they couldn’t wait to “get the old Mindie back”. No one really understood what I was going through - or how difficult and exhausting every task was - and eventually most people dropped away from my life.
Come to find out - external factors, such as litigation/legal issues and/or challenging family dynamics, that lead to stress or anxiety can really delay the process of healing from a brain injury.
Fortunately, my doctor worked diligently to provide me with the right treatments and wonderful therapists.
Looking back - I really could have used someone around, other than my doctors and therapists, that understood what I was going through. So… now I am striving to be the coach I wish I had when things got rough!
My academic background is in Human Services and Project Management, but I feel my personal experience also offers a unique insight into the specific challenges one can face when rebuilding their life after a traumatic event that has led to physical, mental, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges.
